Build a Reusable Prompt Library for ChatGPT and Claude

If you use ChatGPT or Claude often, you probably retype the same kinds of prompts: summarize this, reply to this email, review this code. Scrolling back through old chats to find the wording that worked is slow. Here you save each prompt once, with a title and tags, and pull it up whenever you need it.

Put {{text}} or {{tone}} in a prompt wherever something changes from use to use. When you click Use template, the tool shows one input field per variable, builds the finished prompt as you type, and copies it with one click. You can search, filter by tag, pin favorites, and sort by how often you use each template.

Templates are stored in your browser's localStorage, not on our servers. Export them to a JSON file for a backup or to move them to another device.

Common Uses for Reusable Prompts

You keep rewriting the same prompt

Summaries, translations, and email replies follow the same pattern each time. Save the pattern once and type only the parts that change.

You want a personal prompt library

Collect the prompts you use at work, tag them by task, and search them when you need one instead of digging through chat history.

Only one part of the prompt changes

Mark the changing parts as {{variables}}. The instructions stay fixed and you fill in just the text, topic, or audience.

You work on more than one device

Export your templates as a JSON file and import them in another browser or on another computer.

How to Save a Prompt and Fill In Variables

  1. Click New template and enter a title, optional tags, and the prompt text.
  2. Wrap anything that changes in double curly braces, like {{text}}. Save the template.
  3. Find it with search or tag filters, then click Use template.
  4. Fill in the fields, click Copy prompt, and paste the result into your AI chat.

Note: Your templates are saved in this browser only. Export a JSON file now and then as a backup.

Browser Storage Limits and Backups

  • Templates live in your browser's localStorage. Clearing site data, or closing a private browsing window, can delete them.
  • Export JSON saves every template to one file. Import JSON adds a file's templates to your current list and skips any with the same title and prompt text.
  • Import resets pinned status and usage counts, and the imported templates get new IDs.
  • If your browser can't save, a red warning appears above the search box. Export your templates right away when you see it.
  • Nothing you type is sent to our servers, and no account is needed.

What You Can Do With Each Template

A quick reference for the features in this tool.

FeatureWhat it does
Save templatesStore a title, tags, and prompt text in your browser.
{{variables}}Detects each unique name and creates an input field when you use the template.
Search and tagsSearch titles, prompt text, and tags. Selecting several tags shows only templates that have all of them.
Pin to topPinned templates always stay above the rest, whatever the sort order.
Usage countGoes up by one each time you copy a finished prompt. Sort by Most used to see your favorites.
Edit, duplicate, deleteChange a template, copy it as a starting point (titled "Copy of …"), or remove it after a confirmation.
Export and import JSONBack up all templates to a file, or load a file on another device.

How to Use {{Variables}} and Tags in Your Prompts

Practical ways to get more out of a saved prompt library.

Save a prompt once you've seen it work

A prompt that took several tries to get right is easy to lose in a long chat history.
Save it with a clear title and one or two tags right after it works. The more often you repeat a task, such as summaries, replies, or reviews, the more time a saved prompt gives back.

Which parts of a prompt should be variables

Most prompts have a fixed set of instructions and a few parts that change.
For a summary prompt, the text to summarize and the length change, while the instruction stays the same. Turn only the changing parts into variables such as {{text}} and {{word count}}. Too many variables make a template tedious to fill in.

Keep variable names consistent

A variable name must match exactly each time it appears: {{Text}} and {{text}} are two different fields, while {{ text }} with spaces inside the braces is the same as {{text}}.
Pick a small set of names, like {{text}}, {{topic}}, {{tone}}, and {{audience}}, and reuse them across templates.

Tags, pins, and sorting

Use tags for the task, such as Email or Code. Pin the few templates you use daily so they stay at the top. Sort by Most used to see which ones you actually reach for, then clean up the rest.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Templates disappear after clearing browser data

Clearing cookies and site data in your browser also removes the templates saved for this site.

💡 See the solution▼
Click Export JSON before you clear browser data, switch browsers, or reset a device. Keep the file somewhere safe, such as cloud storage.

Too many templates and no way to find the right one

Without tags, a long list of similar titles gets hard to scan.

💡 See the solution▼
Add one or two tags to every template and pin the ones you use most. Search also checks tags, so a word like "email" finds tagged templates.

Two variable names that were meant to be the same

Writing {{Topic}} in one place and {{topic}} in another creates two separate fields, so you fill in the same thing twice.

💡 See the solution▼
Use one spelling and one letter case for each variable and reuse it everywhere in the template.

A {{variable}} shows up in the copied prompt

A field you left empty is not replaced, so the braces and name are pasted into your AI chat as typed.

💡 See the solution▼
Check the note under the prompt preview, which counts the empty fields, and fill them in before you click Copy prompt.

Sharing an export that contains private prompts

The JSON file includes every saved template, including ones with internal or client details.

💡 See the solution▼
Open the file or review your list before sharing. Delete templates with confidential details, then export again.

Prompt Template FAQ: Saving, Backups, and Variables

Q.Where are my saved prompts stored, and are they sent anywhere?

Q.

A. Templates are saved in your browser's localStorage on this device. Saving, searching, filling in variables, and copying all happen in the page, and nothing you type is sent to our servers.

Q.Will I lose my templates if I clear my browser data?

Q.

A. Yes. There are no accounts and no server copy, so clearing site data or cookies in your browser also deletes your templates. Private browsing windows usually discard stored data when you close them. Use Export JSON to keep a backup file.

Q.Can I use the same templates on another computer or phone?

Q.

A. Templates do not sync automatically. Click Export JSON on the first device, move the file to the second device, and click Import JSON there. Import adds the file's templates to the ones already saved and skips any with the same title and prompt text.

Q.How do {{variables}} work in a prompt template?

Q.

A. Write a name inside double curly braces, such as {{text}} or {{tone}}. When you click Use template, the tool lists each unique name as an input field and builds the final prompt as you type. If a name appears more than once, one field fills every spot. Spaces just inside the braces are ignored, and names are case-sensitive.

Q.What happens to a variable I leave empty?

Q.

A. It stays in the copied prompt exactly as written, for example {{tone}}. The prompt panel shows how many fields are still empty before you copy.

Q.Is there a limit on how many templates I can save?

Q.

A. The tool does not set a limit. Your browser caps how much each site can store, and plain-text prompts take very little space. If the browser refuses to save, a warning appears at the top of the tool so you can export a backup.

Q.Why are there templates when I first open the tool?

Q.

A. Six sample templates are loaded the first time: summarize a text, reply to an email, blog post outline, code review, translation, and meeting notes to action items. Edit them, duplicate them, or delete the ones you don't need.

Q.Does this work with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

Q.

A. Yes. The tool produces plain text that you copy and paste, so it works with any AI chat or API playground. It does not connect to any AI service.

Q.How can I find a prompt quickly when I have many?

Q.

A. Type in the search box to match titles, prompt text, and tags. Click tags to filter; with more than one selected, only templates that have all of them are shown. Pin your favorites with the star to keep them at the top, and sort by most used or A–Z.
