Break a long text into parts that each fit a limit, such as 280 characters for a post. Words and sentences stay whole, and the parts can be numbered.

DetailsSplit long text into parts without cutting words
A plain cut at a fixed number of characters slices words and sentences in half. This tool offers three ways to break each part: at a space, at the end of a sentence, or at the exact limit. Whole words is the default, so every part reads cleanly.
You can set the size in characters or in words, number the parts for a thread, and choose a separator for the Copy all button. Each part shows its own length against your limit so you can check it before you paste.
When to split a long text
Threads on X, Bluesky, and Threads
Break a long post into parts of 280, 300, or 500 characters and number them 1/5 so readers can follow the thread.
Text messages
Split a long message into parts of 160 characters or fewer, so each part fits in a single SMS.
AI chat prompts and API calls
Feed a long document to a tool with an input limit in pieces. Set a smaller size than the limit to leave room for your instructions.
Fields and ads with a hard limit
Cut copy into parts for forms, captions, or ad text where each field has its own maximum, such as 90 characters for a Google Ads description.
How to split text into parts in 4 steps
- Paste your text into the Your text box.
- Choose characters or words, then enter the maximum size of each part or click a preset.
- Pick where parts may break: Whole words, Whole sentences, or Exact cut. Turn on numbering if you want 1/5 labels.
- Click Copy on a single part, or Copy all to take them together with your chosen separator.
Note: The parts update as you type or change a setting. A part that is over the limit shows its length in red.
How the splitting rules work
- Whole words breaks only at spaces and line breaks. A single word longer than the limit, such as a long link, is cut at the limit.
- Whole sentences ends a part at a period, question mark, exclamation mark, or line break. Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., Prof., Sr., Jr., St., vs., e.g., i.e., and single-letter initials do not count as sentence ends. A sentence longer than the limit falls back to whole words.
- Exact cut counts visible characters and breaks at precisely the limit, so a part can start or end with a space. It is available only when you count by characters.
- Spaces and line breaks count as characters. In Whole words and Whole sentences modes, each part has its leading and trailing spaces removed before it is measured.
- Numbering reserves room inside the limit for the label, based on the largest number it will show. Text that fits in one part gets no number.
Common character limits to split for
Typical limits you can use as the part size. Platforms change their rules, so check the current ones before you publish.
| Where | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X post | 280 characters | Free accounts. Every link counts as 23 |
| Bluesky post | 300 characters | Counted as visible characters (graphemes) |
| Threads post | 500 characters | Per post |
| Mastodon post | 500 characters by default | Each server can change it |
| SMS (one message) | 160 characters, or 70 with emoji or non-Latin text | Longer messages are sent as several parts |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters | Not all of it shows before “more” |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters | Per post |
| Google Ads (responsive search ad) | 30 characters per headline, 90 per description | Counted per field |
Leave a margin. X counts each link as 23 characters and applies its own rules to some characters, so a part that measures exactly 280 here can still be rejected there. A limit of 270 is a safer starting point for posts with links.
Choosing where each part breaks
Each break mode suits a different reader, whether that is a person or a program.
Whole words for most text
Whole words fills each part up to the limit and then breaks at the last space. It keeps parts close to the same size, and no word is ever cut in the middle.
Use it as the default for posts, messages, and anything a person will read.
Whole sentences for a thread people will read
Whole sentences ends each part where a sentence ends, so every post makes sense on its own. Parts come out uneven in length, because a sentence is never split to fill space.
It suits threads and newsletters, where a break in the middle of a thought is distracting.
Exact cut and token limits for AI tools
Exact cut uses every allowed character and ignores words, which only suits data a program will reassemble.
AI tools measure input in tokens. OpenAI's rule of thumb for English is about 4 characters per token and 100 tokens per 75 words, so size your parts below the limit for the model you use.
Splitting mistakes to avoid
Splitting at exactly 280 and having X reject a post
You split a thread at 280 characters, but a part with a link is rejected. X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its real length, so a part that fits here can be over there.

Cutting a sentence in half in a thread
Exact cut ends a part at the limit even in the middle of a word, and the next post then starts with a fragment that makes no sense by itself.

Numbers that push a part over the limit
If you add 1/5 labels by hand after splitting, a part that was exactly at the limit goes over it.

Sending a long document to an AI chat in pieces with no context
When you paste the pieces one after another, the assistant may answer the first piece before it has seen the rest.

Splitting text: common questions
Q.How do I split text by character count?
A. Paste your text, keep Characters selected, and type the maximum number of characters per part, or click a preset such as 280. The text is split as you type and each part shows its length. Click Copy on one part, or Copy all to take them together.
Q.Will it cut words in half?
A. Not in the default Whole words mode. It breaks only at spaces and line breaks, so every word stays whole. The one exception is a single word longer than the limit, such as a very long link, which is cut at the limit. Choose Exact cut if you do want a break at precisely the limit.
Q.What does Whole sentences do?
A. It ends a part at the end of a sentence and fits as many whole sentences into each part as the limit allows. A sentence ends at a period, question mark, exclamation mark, or line break. Common short forms such as Mr., Dr., e.g., and i.e. do not count as sentence ends. If one sentence is longer than the limit, that sentence is split by whole words instead.
Q.Can I split by number of words instead of characters?
A. Yes. Switch Chunk size to Words and enter the maximum words per part. A word is any run of characters between spaces or line breaks. Exact cut is switched off in this mode, because splitting by words always breaks between words.
Q.How do I split a long post into a numbered thread?
A. Turn on Number the parts and pick a format: 1/5, (1/5), or 1/. Choose whether the number goes at the start or the end of each part. The tool saves room for the number inside the limit, so a part with its number added still fits. If your text fits in one part, no number is added.
Q.How do I split text for X, Bluesky, or Threads?
A. Use the presets: 280 for X, 300 for Bluesky, and 500 for Threads. X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its length and applies its own rules to some characters, so set a slightly lower limit if your text has links. Bluesky counts visible characters, which is how this tool counts.
Q.How does the tool count characters?
A. It counts each visible character as 1, including spaces and line breaks. An emoji or an accented letter counts as 1 when your browser supports Intl.Segmenter; otherwise the tool counts Unicode code points, and a few emoji may count as more than 1. The count it shows is the one used to split, so each part is never over the limit you set unless a single piece cannot be broken further.
Q.What do the two cleanup options do?
A. Replace line breaks with spaces turns every line break, including blank lines between paragraphs, into a single space before splitting. Collapse repeated spaces turns runs of two or more spaces or tabs into one. Both are off by default and apply to the text before it is split.
Q.Can I split text to paste into ChatGPT or another AI chat?
A. Yes. AI tools count tokens rather than characters. OpenAI gives a rule of thumb for English of about 4 characters per token and 100 tokens per 75 words, so a part of 4,000 characters is roughly 1,000 tokens. Check the real limit for your model, set a smaller size to be safe, and use numbering so each part says which one it is.
Q.Is my text sent to a server?
A. No. The tool splits your text with JavaScript in your browser, and there is no upload step. Closing or reloading the page clears the text.
