Check your tags against each platform's limits
Paste a list of hashtags, with or without the #, and the tool counts the tags and their characters and checks the list, with your post text if you add it, against the limits for X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn, and Bluesky. It finds duplicates and tags that break, trims a long list to the number you choose, and copies the result in the format you pick. Two more tabs rank the hashtags in a batch of pasted posts and build a search URL for finding hashtag posts on X.
When to run a hashtag list through a counter
Cutting a list down to Instagram's 5
Paste an old 30-tag set, choose 5 (Instagram), and keep the first five in your order of importance.
Fitting a post and its tags into 280
Add your post text to see the X count with the tags included, using the same weighting X uses.
Planning a YouTube description
Check that you are far under 60, and put the three you want shown above the title at the front of the list.
Seeing which tags a campaign used
Paste the posts from a campaign or a competitor and rank every hashtag by uses and by number of posts.
How to count and trim hashtags in 4 steps
- Paste your hashtags into Hashtag input, separated by spaces, new lines, or commas. The # is optional.
- Read the tag count, the character count, and the X count, and check each platform card for a red Over limit mark.
- Click Remove duplicates, choose how many tags to keep and click Keep first, or click Fix invalid tags.
- Click Copy tags, or add your post text and click Copy text + tags.
Note: The Separator and Sort settings change both the character count and the text you copy, so set them before you copy.
How the counts are worked out
- Characters: the tag total includes the separators between tags. Emoji and multi-part symbols count as one character in the plain counts.
- X count: most characters count as 1, emoji and Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23. The 280 limit is checked against this number.
- Text plus tags: when you add post text, the tool appends the tags after a blank line and checks the combined text against each platform.
- Platform limits change: Instagram is applying its 5-hashtag limit in stages, so check the real posting screen as well.
- X post search: the tool only builds a search URL. It does not open X on its own or read any data from it.

Instagram moved to 5 hashtags
Instagram announced the 5-hashtag limit in December 2025 and has been applying it in stages. Put your most relevant tags first, choose 5 (Instagram), and click Keep first.
YouTube over-tagging
More than 60 hashtags makes YouTube ignore all of them. Even below that, the more you add, the less relevant each one looks to viewers.
Weighted counts, post counts on X, and the Instagram cap
How X counts characters, how to find posts for a hashtag, and what changed on Instagram.
How X counts a post that contains hashtags
X does not count raw characters. Its documentation describes a weighted count: most characters count as 1, emoji count as 2, and a link always counts as 23.
A post written in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean therefore fits about half as many characters. Hashtags use the same budget as the rest of the post, so check the text and tags together.
Finding how many posts use a hashtag on X
X search does not give a total. In the X post search tab, enter a hashtag, a date range, and a language, and the tool builds a query such as #tag lang:en -filter:retweets since:2026-01-01 until:2026-02-01.
Open it on X, copy the posts you see, and paste them into Tag frequency to count them. For an exact total across a period, use the post counts feature of the X API, which may require a paid plan.
The Instagram 5-hashtag limit and your saved sets
A saved set of 20 or 30 hashtags no longer works as it did before the December 2025 change. Instagram has described the new limit as up to 5 hashtags in a Reel or post.
Paste your old set here, put the tags that fit this post at the front, and use Keep first to cut it to five.
Why a hashtag list gets rejected or ignored
More hashtags than Instagram allows
You paste a set of 20 or 30 tags saved from before the change, and Instagram does not accept the post or does not treat the extra tags as hashtags.

A post over 280 once the tags are added
A post that looks short goes over because the tags, emoji, and a link each use more of the budget than their length suggests.
💡 See the solution▼
A tag that breaks at the first symbol
A tag such as #well-known or #fun! stops at the hyphen or the exclamation mark, so the platform links only #well or #fun.

Too many hashtags on YouTube
A very long list in a YouTube description can pass 60 hashtags, and then YouTube ignores all of them and may treat the video as over-tagged.

Hashtag limit FAQ
Q.How many hashtags can you use on Instagram now?
A. Instagram announced in December 2025 that a post or Reel can have up to 5 hashtags, down from 30, and rolled the change out gradually. Some accounts may have seen the change later than others, so the tool checks against 5. If you have a longer list, choose 5 (Instagram) and click Keep first to cut it down in the order you typed it.
Q.How does X count characters when a post has hashtags?
A. X's documentation says posts can have up to 280 weighted characters. Most characters count as 1, emoji count as 2, and so do Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters. Every link counts as 23 whatever its length. Hashtags are part of the post text, so they use the same budget. The X count in the tool applies these rules to your text plus your tags.
Q.How many hashtags can you use on YouTube?
A. YouTube Help says that if a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores every one of them. Out of the hashtags in your description, up to three appear above the video title. The tool flags a list over 60. Over-tagging can also get a video removed from uploads or search, so a short list is safer.
Q.How many hashtags can you use on Threads?
A. Threads uses a single topic tag per post, so the tool shows a limit of 1 for Threads. Posts are limited to 500 characters. Put the one tag you care about first.
Q.Do hashtags count toward the character limit?
A. Yes. A hashtag is ordinary text, so it uses characters, and so does the space or line break between tags. The tool adds your separators to the total. Choose Space or New line to match how you will paste them.
Q.Do I need to type the # symbol?
A. No. Separate words with spaces, new lines, or commas, and the tool adds the # for you. A full-width hashtag symbol is converted, and tags run together like #one#two are split.
Q.Which characters break a hashtag?
A. A hashtag is made of letters, numbers, and underscores. A character such as !, ?, a hyphen, or an emoji ends the tag at that point, so only the part before it becomes a link. The tool marks these tags in red, shows where each one breaks, and Fix invalid tags trims them to the working part. Tags that are only numbers are flagged too, because some platforms, such as X, do not link them.
Q.How do I remove duplicate hashtags?
A. Click Remove duplicates. By default #Tag and #tag count as the same tag. Untick Treat #Tag and #tag as the same if you want capitalization to matter. You can also sort the list by length or alphabetically, and remove one tag with its x button.
Q.Can I see how many posts use a hashtag on X?
A. Not directly. X search does not show a post count, and this tool cannot read data from X. Use the X post search tab to build a search with a date range, language, and reposts excluded, open it on X, copy the results, and paste them into Tag frequency to count them. The X API has a post counts feature for exact totals, which may require a paid plan.
Q.How do I count which hashtags are used most in a set of posts?
A. Open the Tag frequency tab and paste your posts, separated by a blank line or one post per line. The tool ranks every hashtag by how many times it appears and how many posts contain it. You can look up a single tag, copy the table, or save it as a CSV file.
Q.Is my text sent to a server?
A. No. Counting, sorting, and ranking all run in your browser with JavaScript, and nothing is uploaded. The text stays in the page while it is open.
