Bio check

One bio, eight sets of limits

Every platform gives a bio a different amount of space. Type or paste your text, and this tool shows how many characters are left on Instagram, X, TikTok, Threads, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Bluesky at the same time. A phone preview shows the text on a profile, with anything over the limit in red, and a button trims the end to fit. Switch to Post / caption to check a post instead. X posts use X's weighted count, where emoji and CJK characters count as 2 and links as 23.

When you need to fit text to a limit

Setting up several accounts

Write the bio once, see which platforms it already fits, and trim only the ones that do not.

Rewriting a bio for TikTok

Cut a 150-character bio to the 80-character TikTok version, and check the trimmed text on the preview.

Checking an Instagram caption

Use Post / caption with Instagram as the main platform and keep the key message above the dashed fold line.

Counting an X post before sending

See the X count with links and emoji weighted the way X weighs them, and trim to fit.

Writing bios for a client

Show that a draft fits the limit on every platform before you send it over.

How to check a bio in 4 steps

  1. Choose Bio or Post / caption, then pick your main platform.
  2. Type or paste your text, or start from one of the bio templates.
  3. Read the Bio check cards for the characters left on each platform, and the preview for how it will look.
  4. If you are over the limit, click Trim to fit, then click Copy text.

Note: Click any platform card to make it the main platform and see its preview.

How the counts work

  • Characters: the tool counts what you see. An emoji is one character and a line break is one character. Some apps count them differently, so keep a few characters spare.
  • X posts: post mode uses X's weighted count with the 280 limit. The X bio, 160 characters, is counted as plain characters.
  • Display name: the display name check is only available for X, where the limit is 50 characters.
  • Preview: hashtags, links, and mentions are shown in blue. The screens are illustrations, and the follower numbers are placeholders.
  • Limits change: platforms update their limits without notice, and some guides disagree. Check the app's field for an exact fit.

Bio and post character limits by platform

Write the shortest version first
TikTok's 80 characters is the tightest bio field. A bio that works at 80 can be extended for Instagram and Threads at 150 and for X at 160, and trimmed from there.

Numbers vary between sources
Guides sometimes disagree, especially on LinkedIn and Facebook intros. The figures here are the most commonly published ones.

Reusing one bio across platforms and X's weighted count

How to adapt a bio for each limit, and why an X post can be shorter than it looks.

Build up from the 80-character core

Write a one-line version that states who you are and what you post, in 80 characters or fewer. That fits TikTok as it is.
Add a proof point or a call to action for Instagram and Threads at 150 and X at 160, and use the extra room on YouTube and LinkedIn for detail.

Threads shares Instagram's 150

A Threads bio has the same 150-character limit as Instagram, so one text can serve both. The 500-character number belongs to a Threads post.
Select Threads or Instagram as the main platform and check both cards at the same time.

Why an X post fits fewer characters than 280

X weighs characters. Its documentation says most characters count as 1, emoji count as 2, and a link always counts as 23.
A post written in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean fits about half as many characters, and a long link costs the same as a short one. In Post / caption mode the tool applies these weights for you.

Common bio and caption mistakes

The bio is rejected when you save it

You trim a bio to exactly the limit, paste it into the app, and the app refuses it. Line breaks or an emoji took more room than the count showed.

💡 See the solution▼
Look at the Without line breaks figure and leave a few characters under the limit. The tool warns you when your text has emoji or combined characters.

Mixing up the bio limit and the post limit

You see 500 for Threads or 2,200 for Instagram and write a bio that long, but those numbers are for posts and captions.

💡 See the solution▼
Keep the mode on Bio for profile text. The Bio check cards use the bio limits, and Post / caption switches to the post limits.

Counting an X post as 280 plain characters

A post with a link and an emoji looks short, but the link costs 23 and the emoji 2, and X refuses it.

💡 See the solution▼
Use Post / caption with X as the main platform and read the X count below the text. Trim to fit with the button if it is over.

Putting the key message after the Instagram fold

A caption fits in 2,200 characters, but the feed shows only the start, and a call to action in the last line is rarely read.

💡 See the solution▼
Turn on the Instagram preview in Post / caption mode. Put the main message above the dashed line and the hashtags below it.

Bio character limit FAQ

Q.What is the Instagram bio character limit?

Q.

A. An Instagram bio can be 150 characters. The caption limit is separate and is 2,200 characters. Choose Bio in the tool for the 150 limit and Post / caption for the 2,200 limit.

Q.How many characters can an X (Twitter) bio have?

Q.

A. An X bio can be 160 characters and the display name 50. Posts are a separate limit of 280 weighted characters. The tool counts the bio as plain characters and counts posts with X's weighting.

Q.What is the TikTok bio limit?

Q.

A. A TikTok bio is limited to 80 characters, the shortest of the main platforms. If you reuse one bio everywhere, write the 80-character version first and add detail for longer fields. The Short (TikTok, 80) template shows the size.

Q.What is the Threads bio limit?

Q.

A. A Threads bio can be 150 characters, the same as Instagram. The 500 figure you see for Threads is the limit for a post, not for the bio. The tool keeps the two apart with its Bio and Post / caption modes.

Q.How long can a YouTube channel description or a LinkedIn headline be?

Q.

A. A YouTube channel description can be 1,000 characters, and a video description 5,000. A LinkedIn headline is commonly listed at 220 characters and the About section at 2,600, but sources vary, so check the field in the app before you rely on the number.

Q.How does X count characters in a post?

Q.

A. X's documentation says a post can hold 280 weighted characters. Most characters count as 1. Emoji count as 2, and so do Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters. Every link counts as 23, whatever its length. In Post / caption mode with X as the main platform, the tool counts this way and shows the X count under the text.

Q.Do line breaks and emoji count toward the limit?

Q.

A. The tool counts each line break as one character and each emoji as one visible character. Platforms can count them differently, and a combined emoji may use more than one character in the app. The tool warns you when your text has any, so leave a few characters of room under the limit.

Q.Where does an Instagram caption fold?

Q.

A. A caption can hold 2,200 characters, but the feed shows only the start before it folds behind more. About the first 125 characters show. In Post / caption mode with Instagram as the main platform, the preview draws a dashed line at 125 characters so you can put the key message above it.

Q.Are the limits always up to date?

Q.

A. Platforms change limits without notice, and different guides report slightly different numbers for some fields, such as the LinkedIn headline. The tool uses the commonly published limits. For a bio that sits right at the limit, confirm in the app's own field.

Q.Is my text sent to a server?

Q.

A. No. The counting and preview run in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
