How this text splitter breaks a string into items

The tool cuts your text wherever the delimiter appears and shows each piece as a numbered item. The delimiter can be one character, such as a comma, a longer string, such as ##, or a regular expression.

Trim each item removes spaces at both ends, and Remove empty items drops the blanks left by repeated delimiters. Copy all and Download .txt join the items with new lines, commas, tabs, or spaces, so the same tool turns a comma list into a column, or a column into a comma list.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded.

Jobs that start with a split

A comma list into rows

Paste tags, emails, or IDs separated by commas and copy them back one per line, ready for a spreadsheet column or a text file.

A column into one line

Split on New line, then copy with Commas. A pasted column of values becomes a single comma-separated line for a query or a form field.

URL paths and log fields

Split on / to read the segments of a URL, or on a pipe to separate the fields of a log line.

Mixed delimiters

Use a regex such as [,;] when a list mixes commas and semicolons, so one split handles both.

How to split text in 3 steps

  1. Paste your text into the Input text box.
  2. Click a delimiter button, or type your own in the delimiter box. Turn on Use regex if you want to enter a pattern.
  3. Set Trim each item, Remove empty items, and the output format, then click Copy all or Download .txt.

Note: The result updates as you type, so you can change the delimiter and compare the output right away.

Delimiter rules to know

  • Plain mode: the delimiter is matched as exact text, and case matters. Characters such as . and | have no special meaning here. The three exceptions are \n for a line break, \t for a tab, and \ for a backslash.
  • Regex mode: the delimiter is a JavaScript regular expression with no flags. A match anywhere in the text splits it. A capturing group adds the matched text to the results, so use (?:...) when you only want to group.
  • Order of steps: the text is split first, then each item is trimmed, then empty items are removed. With Trim each item off, an item made only of spaces is not empty and stays.
  • Empty delimiter: with nothing in the delimiter box, the whole text is returned as one item.
  • Long results: the page lists the first 500 items. Copy all and Download .txt always include every item.

Delimiters you can use

Enter these in the delimiter box, or click the matching button. The regex row needs Use regex on.

DelimiterHow to enter itTypical data
Comma,CSV values, tags, email lists
Semicolon;Some CSV exports, CSS declarations
Tab\tCells copied from Excel or Google Sheets
New line\nOne item per line lists

A delimiter is the character or string that marks where one value ends and the next begins. Splitting on it is the same operation as the split function in most programming languages.

Delimited text, from CSV to log lines

Practical ways to use the delimiter, the regex option, and the output format.

Splitting a row copied from a spreadsheet

When you copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets, the cells in a row are separated by tab characters. Choose the Tab button to split that row into one item per cell.

Splitting on more than one delimiter

Turn on Use regex and enter a character class such as [,;|]. To ignore spaces around each delimiter, use \s*[,;]\s*. Trim each item does the same job for spaces left at the ends of items.

Converting between a column and a comma-separated line

To turn a column into a line, split on New line and copy with Commas. To go the other way, split on Comma and copy with New lines. The Copy and download with menu sets the joiner, so you do not need a separate tool.

Common splitting problems

Empty items from repeated delimiters

A string such as a,,b has nothing between the two commas, so the list gets an empty item between a and b.

💡 See the solution▼
Turn on Remove empty items. Trimming runs first, so items made only of spaces are removed too.

Extra spaces around items

A list written as red, green, blue splits on the comma and leaves a space in front of green and blue.

💡 See the solution▼
Keep Trim each item on, which is the default. It removes spaces, tabs, and line breaks at both ends of each item.

A single pipe splits the text into characters

With Use regex on, a lone | is a regex with two empty alternatives, so it matches between every character and splits the text into single characters.

💡 See the solution▼
Escape it as \| in regex mode, or turn Use regex off. The Pipe button enters the right form for the current mode.

Delimiters show up as extra items

A regex with a capturing group, such as (,|;), adds the matched comma or semicolon to the results as separate items.

💡 See the solution▼
Use a character class such as [,;], or a non-capturing group such as (?:,|;).

Text splitter FAQ

Q.How do I split a comma-separated list into one item per line?

Q.

A. Paste the list, leave the delimiter on Comma, and click Copy all. The default output is one item per line. Each item also appears as a numbered row in the result.

Q.How do I turn lines into a comma-separated list?

Q.

A. Choose New line as the delimiter, then set Copy and download with to Commas or Comma + space. Click Copy all and the items come out joined on one line.

Q.Can the delimiter be more than one character?

Q.

A. Yes. In plain mode the whole string is matched exactly, so -- , ### , or a word such as AND all work. The match is case-sensitive.

Q.How do I split on several different delimiters at once?

Q.

A. Turn on Use regex and enter a pattern such as [,;] to split on a comma or a semicolon, or \s+ to split on any run of whitespace. A match anywhere in the text splits it.

Q.How do I split text on tabs or line breaks?

Q.

A. Use the Tab and New line buttons, or type \t or \n in the delimiter box. New line works with both Windows (CRLF) and Unix (LF) line breaks.

Q.What happens when two delimiters are next to each other?

Q.

A. The text between them is empty, so an empty item appears in the list. Turn on Remove empty items to drop those. Trimming runs first, so an item that holds only spaces is also removed.

Q.What does Trim each item do?

Q.

A. It removes spaces, tabs, and line breaks from both ends of every item. It is on by default. Characters inside an item are not changed.

Q.Does this work with a regex that has parentheses?

Q.

A. It does, but a capturing group such as (,|;) adds the matched delimiter to the results as extra items. Use a non-capturing group, written (?:,|;), or a character class such as [,;] to avoid that.

Q.Is my text uploaded anywhere?

Q.

A. No. The splitting runs in your browser with JavaScript, and nothing is sent to a server. The text stays in the page while it is open.

Q.Is there a limit on the text size?

Q.

A. The tool sets no limit on the input. The list on the page shows the first 500 items to keep the page responsive, but Copy all and Download .txt include every item.
